Shri Lakshmi (Sanskrit: लक्ष्मी Lakṣmī: 'she who leads to one's goal'), is one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism. She is the goddess of wealth, fortune, love, beauty, joy and prosperity, and associated with Maya ('Illusion'). Along with Shri Parvati and Shri Saraswati, she forms the trinity of Hindu goddesses.
She is venerated as a principle aspect of the Mother goddess and is both the wife and divine energy (shakti) of the Hindu god Vishnu, the Supreme Being. She is also the Supreme Goddess and assists Vishnu to create, protect and evolve the universe. When Vishnu descended onto the Earth as the avatars Rama and Krishna, Lakshmi, as Mahalakshmi, accompanied him as consort, Sita and Radha or Rukmini, respectively.
Lakshmi is depicted in Indian art as an elegantly dressed, prosperity-showering, golden-coloured woman with a royal white elephant as her vehicle, signifying prosperity, patience and generosity. She typically stands or sits on a lotus pedestal, while holding a lotus in her hand, symbolizing fortune, self-knowledge, and spiritual liberation.
